We have a few venues on the tour calendar that brings golf closer to home, most notably The Open, but there’s something lasting and endearing about the annual BMW Championship that takes place at Wentworth Club in Surrey.

Adorned with centuries old oak trees and brilliantly crafted with beautiful water features away from the meticulously cut fairways, the venue is as much fun to talk around as it is to play golf on. That being said, playing the course proved to be less of a leisurely stroll for those players who fell short of the cut over the weekend.

Off the tee

With the Ryder Cup just a few weeks away, we saw the majority of Luke Donald's team tee it up at Wentworth ahead of the biennial showdown at Bethpage Black.

Although he won't be representing Europe, a Ryder Cup veteran who was at Wentworth is Padraig Harrington. He won the Seniors Open at Sunningdale just a few weeks ago, and Harrington has been a long-time Wilson ambassador.

Like any huge tour venue, this course has a demanding layout that necessitates accurate, powerful shots off the tee. Wentworth West has plenty of notoriously challenging holes including a pair of par-5 finishing holes that always make for great drama. A top player will benefit from playing with the Staff Model X golf ball.

The Staff Model X ball is a real machine and has been designed to give you excellent distance and spin performance off the tee. If you’re teeing up your ball on a par-5 or lengthy par 4, this is the model that’ll give you monster distances and help you better place your shot down the fairway.

From the fairways

Gary Woodland is similarly a world-class player who’s used Wilson golf balls to achieve his successes. He didn't appear at Wentworth to focus on his Ryder Cup Vice-Captaincy for Team USA, but those in the field needed to be meticulous with their fairway placements in order to handle the many slopes and contours that constitute Wentworth West.

The standard Staff Model will be a huge benefit to players looking to make GIR as they tackle the course this week. Wilson has given this ball a 4-piece urethane construction that boosts precision and consistency for greater overall accuracy. This is the kind of trusted feel you’ll want in a golf ball when you’re tackling a tricky par-3 like the 2nd hole at Wentworth.

Around the greens

It goes without saying that Championship-level golf courses boast very impressive, multi-tiered greens that can be as deceptive as they are stunning to look at. Top tour pros like Rory McIlroy have their own approach to putting that will include playing with a ball that looks best to them when they’re standing over the ball.

While the pros have all sorts of top-of-the-line gear at the ready in their bags, we’d like to recommend you a golf ball that most double-figure-handicap players will feel at home using.

The Duo Soft TRK 360 from Wilson has a high-energy core that delivers exceptional distance while a two-layer construction provides exceptional ball flights. This ball also features a distinctive striped alignment aid that runs around the circumference of the ball, helping you better line up your putts and have a greater understanding of where to face your clubhead on every strike.
